He is often considered the greatest of all the famous ‘Generation of '27’, which included FEDERICO GARCIA LORCA and RAFAEL ALBERTI. Cernuda is also highly prized as, with CONSTANTINE CAVAFY and Sandro Penna (1906-77), one of the great homosexual poets of the 20th century. An anti-Francoist, he escaped from Madrid in 1938 and moved to Great Britain. where he worked at Glasgow University, and later Cambridge and London
