Born in Lakewood, California, he began cycling in 1975 and dropped out of high school to race professionally. In 1986 he became the first American to win the Tour de France, winning it again in 1989 and 1990. His 1989 victory captivated the sport- ing world. After 23 days and 2,253km (1,400 miles), LeMond rode the race's fastest ever time-trial to beat French favourite Laurent Fignon (1960- _) by just eight seconds.
