Born in Edinburgh, and educated at Christ Church, Oxford, he served in the Royal Navy (1939-46) before becoming a librar- ian, lecturer and later editor of the BBC’s First Reading (1953-54). In 1950 he married the ballerina Moira Shearer (1926-2006).
